No. 49 on Iraqi Most Wanted List Caught

Aired April 27, 2003 - 07:52   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

ANDERSON COOPER, CNN ANCHOR: We have some breaking news to report about another arrest of one of the Iraqi most wanted. For the information, we go to Patty Davis out of Washington -- Patty.
PATTY DAVIS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Anderson, U.S. Central Command has just announced it has another big fish, that it has taken into custody. His name is Husam Muhammed Amin Al-Yasim, the former national monitoring director we're told is now under coalition control.

He is the six of clubs. And we're told number 49 on the U.S. Central Command list of 55. The six of clubs in that deck of cards that the U.S. has handed out to troops, to help find former top Iraqi officials.

Now the Central Command is not saying the circumstances under which this man was brought to the U.S., whether he surrendered or whether he was captured. We do know that they do hope, though, from taking these people into custody, now that brings the number to 16 on that U.S. deck of cards. They do hope that this will lead eventually to Saddam Hussein and perhaps his sons, as well.

Number 16 now on that deck of cards in U.S. custody -- Anderson?

COOPER: Patty, you said he was the national monitoring director. Have they publicly announced at all what that means, monitoring what?

DAVIS: Yes, that's a good question. No, they haven't said. We don't even know the circumstances. And we don't know exactly what that job entailed at this point. We hope to learn more as the U.S. Central Command comes up with some more details as the day goes forward -- Anderson?

COOPER: All right, and we'll bring those details to you. Thanks very much, Patty Davis, appreciate it.
