Comedians Find Work While Sorting Their Whites

Aired June 3, 2003 - 19:55   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

ANDERSON COOPER, CNN ANCHOR: Since even before Lenny Bruce, some folks out there have taken exception to comedians who work blue, as they say. They like their comedy clean. Well if clean is your thing, you might want to check out Lucy's Laundromat in Los Angeles on Wednesdays. Reporter Eric Horng did.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ERIC HORNG, CNN NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): At first glance, this may look like your typical laundry mat. But while clothes are rolling in the dryers, comedians have customers rolling in the aisles. Well, sort of.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: People have actually left with wet tonight laundry tonight in protest of this comedy.

HORNG: You may think a laundromat is a strange place to do stand-up comedy. But for these brave souls, a gig is a gig even if it means performing in front a restroom door.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The only time a crowd will at me is when they're going past me to the pay toilets.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: We've been heckled by homeless people in wheelchairs.

HORNG: Comedian Kristy Murphy (ph) came up with the idea for the Wednesday night comedy show and started it two years ago. It's a win- win concept. Comedians get to refine their material, customers get a free show, and everyone's clothes, including the comedians, come out April fresh.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You never know what the audience is going to be like, you never know if you're going to feel it or not sometimes. You try out new material. So I figured if I do my laundry here, at least I've accomplished something.

HORNG: Don't be surprise if these comedians end up at laundry mat near you. Murphy's ultimate goal? A national tour.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I want to take it on the road and bring it to people doing laundry everywhere. That's my maniacal plan.

HORNG: Eric Horng, CNN, Los Angeles.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

COOPER: I hate it when people talk to me in the laundry mat. There's no way I would go to that thing.
