British Police Identify Kelly's Body

Aired July 19, 2003 - 09:02   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

HEIDI COLLINS, CNN ANCHOR: We are at Wantage, England. You are listening to the Thames Valley Police talking about Dr. David Kelly, the British arms expert, who -- we are trying to learn whether or not it was formally his body. We're waiting for formal identification that is found.
Let's go ahead and listen in now. I believe this is Constable Peter Neyroud.

CONSTABLE PETER NEYROUD, THAMES VALLEY POLICE: I'm not a medical -- I'm not -- haven't got a medical background, but I think they're a form of painkiller.

QUESTION: Have you got a (UNINTELLIGIBLE)?

NEYROUD: Now, we haven't. That's still part of the investigation at the moment.

QUESTION: Can you explain what the forensics officers are ...

NEYROUD: Still haven't.

QUESTION: ... doing at the (UNINTELLIGIBLE)?

NEYROUD: OK. There is an investigation ongoing at the moment, and I can comment no further on that at this time.

QUESTION: (UNINTELLIGIBLE)?

NEYROUD: That's part of the investigation. I'm afraid I cannot comment any further at this time on that.

QUESTION: Can you tell us what the knife looked like? What type of knife is it?

NEYROUD: Again, that is part of the investigation.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. I'm afraid that's...

NEYROUD: I can't make any further comment.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: ... all we have time for at the moment.

NEYROUD: OK. Thank you.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We'll have updates for you as and when they're available. Thank you.

COLLINS: We got into that press conference just a little late, so I want to go ahead and clarify for you what we just heard. I believe we were listening to Constable Peter Neyroud of the Thames Valley Police there in Wantage, England.

There has been a positive identification that the body that was found in Oxfordshire was that of Dr. David Kelly. You may know that he was one of the arms experts at the center of a dispute about whether the British government doctored its intelligence reports on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction.

So that is the very latest coming to us once again from Wantage, England. A positive identification found of Dr. David Kelly. Also a knife found at the scene. We do not know what that was all about. We are also getting in just now from the Associated Press that David Kelly died from bleeding from a cut on his wrist.

We will, of course, keep you updated on all of this as we learn more about it.
