Coach Says He Did Not See Signs of Danger with Dotson

Aired July 28, 2003 - 19:05   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

ANDERSON COOPER, CNN ANCHOR: Grim suspicions are now confirmed in the case of missing Baylor University basketball player Patrick Dennehy.
Overnight investigators confirmed the decomposing body found in a field near Waco, Texas, is that of Dennehy.

To get the very latest on the investigation, we go to Waco, Texas, where Miguel Marquez is standing by tonight -- Miguel.

MIGUEL MARQUEZ, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hello, Anderson.

This story does seem to be growing a bit. Today, the basketball coach here at Baylor held a press conference. He addressed many things, certainly the grief and betrayal that he feels, the department and the school feels over this murder.

He also defended himself against allegations that he may have seen some of this coming.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

DAVE BLISS, BAYLOR UNIVERSITY MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH: I never -- and I've done this for 30 years, I never once suspected that we had any type of problem with this area. Had I suspected that, I guarantee you with the experience that we've had, we would have nipped it in the bud.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MARQUEZ: Now, Coach Bliss did concede during that press conference that he received a letter from Carlton Dotson's mother-in- law but he said he received it too late, mid-June, and by that time Carlton Dotson had left.

The letter, apparently, expressed some concerns about Mr. Dotson's frame of mind.

Dotson is being held in Maryland for the murder of Patrick Dennehy. Dennehy's body was positively identified last night, as you mentioned, after it was found last week.

As for the investigation, Anderson, I can tell you that the police here and the sheriff's department here is the lead agency. This is an early stage of the investigation. They're getting -- they have to continue processing the scene south of Waco here and the autopsy on Mr. Dennehy may take weeks to finish -- Anderson.

COOPER: Hopefully find out some information, at least forensically, from the remains. Miguel, thanks very much for the update.
