Judge Bars Media from Revealing Alleged Rape Victim's Name

Aired July 29, 2003 - 19:29   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

ANDERSON COOPER, CNN ANCHOR: The alleged victim in the Kobe Bryant case has gotten a little relief. A judge ordered media outlets not to disseminate her name or her image.
As for Bryant's name or image, CNN has been checking in with some of his partners in endorsement deals.

CNN's Deborah Feyerick is going to fill us in now on what they said.

But Deborah, I want to start by asking how Eagle, Colorado, is handling a case of such huge interest? Such a tiny town, Deborah.

DEBORAH FEYERICK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, it is a tiny town and they're doing the best they can. County commissioners have already allocated additional money to be spent on this trial. And they're trying to keep everything at bay, trying to keep a sense of order. Sounds a lot easier than it really is.

Right now we can tell you Kobe Bryant is very upset that a judge is allowing cameras in the court next week. That's when Bryant is supposed to be here to hear the formal charges against him.

His lawyers are asking the judge to reconsider. They say they were in the process of preparing their objection when the judge made his ruling. And they say that is not right under Colorado code.

Of course, Kobe's defense team very concerned that pre-trial publicity can hurt his right to a fair trial.

Now, the judge himself has voiced similar concerns. And as you say he is cracking down on the press. There can be no videotaping of the alleged victim, her family, the witnesses, or the jurors as they come and go.

In fact, the only person who's been left off the list, the only person, really, who's not off limits is Kobe Bryant himself.

Now, the judge who is making these rulings right now, he's not going to be the one who ultimately hears this case. If he decides that there is enough evidence for it to go to trial then the case kicks up from county court to district court.

Meantime, this young woman, somebody we spoke to, a source who is -- recently spoke to the young woman says she's trying to avoid watching all television. However, she says, the reality is daunting of what has happened to her and all the attention that it's getting. As for the endorsements, well, Nike, McDonald's, Spalding, Coke, they say right now they've got a contract in place with Kobe Bryant and until this legal matter is over, the contracts stay -- Anderson.

COOPER: All right. Deborah Feyerick that's the latest. Thanks very much.
