Kobe Bryant Hearing

Aired August 7, 2003 - 06:08   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Now on to the Kobe Bryant case. Reality may be setting in for the L.A. Lakers star. For the first time, he's appeared in court as a defendant in a rape case.
Here's CNN's Deborah Feyerick to tell us what happened in court.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

DEBORAH FEYERICK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Kobe Bryant looked somber as he entered the Eagle County Courthouse. He did not acknowledge the handful of fans who cheered him, shouting his name as he walked into the court.

Now, his wife, Vanessa, was not with him, and he did not have a police escort. Instead, he brought his lawyer and his own security.

The court appearance was very quick. It started at 4:00 on the nose Denver time. Bryant's lawyer, Pamela Mackey, waived her client's right to hear the sexual assault charge read. The judge set a preliminary hearing for October 9. That's 30 days longer than is standard.

FREDERICK GANNETT, JUDGE: And you've requested a hearing. The rule requires that if you request that hearing be held within 30 days. Any objection to that being read?

KOBE BRYANT, L.A. LAKERS: No, sir.

FEYERICK: Those two words, "no, sir," were the only words that Kobe Bryant spoke in the courtroom.

Meantime, the judge appointed a special investigator to look into leaks Bryant's defense team has said that the sheriff and other law enforcement authorities have been leaking information to the press, even though there is a court order prohibiting it.

Now, seven and a half minutes after this hearing started, it was over. Kobe Bryant left, returning to the airport, taking off about an hour after landing.

Deborah Feyerick, CNN, Eagle, Colorado.
