CNN BREAKING NEWS

Standoff in Atlanta After Reported Bank Robbery

Aired August 18, 2003 - 11:16   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: We have a situation coming to us just now into CNN Center. We want to let you know what's happening here. This is just east of Atlanta. You are looking at these pictures from our affiliate WAJA here in Atlanta.
This right now is a standoff with police. You see what appears to be a number of them through this rather murky picture here. They believe that they have pinned down there a bank robber who had robbed a bank in Conyers, Georgia, which is just east of this particular point, you see here, perhaps about another eight or nine miles east of there.

A Wachovia Bank was robbed. The suspect there left that scene and was chased down a couple miles west towards Atlanta. And they now have this man pinned down.

But we understand that he has also shot a police officer in the process. We understand that a deputy has been shot, and the injuries are believed to be non-life threatening. But the standoff is continuing.

For those of you who may be familiar with the area, this is just south of Stone Mountain and just north of -- or just outside of Lithonia in Atlanta -- outside of Atlanta.

We'll keep our eye on this story and let you know how this develops if it turns into something major there.
