CNN BREAKING NEWS

Reports of Dozens Wounded in Israel Blast

Aired September 9, 2003 - 11:05   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Let's go back to our breaking news, and that is a bus explosion near an Army base just outside of Tel Aviv.
Our Jerrold Kessel's standing by with the latest on that.

Jerrold, what do you have?

JERROLD KESSEL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: (AUDIO GAP)

... explosion east of Tel Aviv, we understand at a bus stop, a soldiers hitchhiking station just outside a big Army base that is in that area, and one of the major hospitals in central Israel. And the initial reports are talking about dozens of people being wounded. That's from the medical relief services, ambulances rushing to the spot. As I say, there is a large hospital very close to the site from where the explosion happened. And one television station, Daryn, is here in Israel reporting that there was a suicide bomber. But that has not yet been confirmed by Israeli police or any other source. Israel has been on a very high state of alert for the last several days, and particularly high state of alert today, that police were saying this in the wake of that attack by Israel on the Hamas leadership down in Gaza, including the militant Islamic organizations spiritual leader Shaikh Ahmed Yassin (ph), the Hamas leader survived the attack.

Israel has mounted a major campaign against the Hamas leadership in the wake of that bus bombing here in Jerusalem some three weeks ago in which 22 people were killed, and Hamas had vowed revenge to wreak awful revenge they had been saying over the last few weeks. Israelis on high alert, and now we do believe, although I do want to circumscribe the report at this very first initial stage, that it was indeed a case of a suicide bomber, but the initial reports pointing in the direction of a terror attack in Central Israel, and the first reports, Daryn, are talking of dozens of people hurt.

KAGAN: All right, Jerrold, thank you for that.
