LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Alfred Hitchcock, the director known as the master of suspense for films such as "Psycho," "North by Northwest" and "The Birds," often made a cameo appearance in his movies. Now he's the leading man -- on a new U.S. postage stamp.
The 32-cent stamp is now on sale as part of the Postal Service's Legends of Hollywood series that includes Humphrey Bogart, Marilyn Monroe and James Dean.
The stamp shows a portrait of Hitchcock. It also has, in one corner, the stylized profile that opened the "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" television series of the 1950s and '60s.
"My father's legacy will be preserved forever in American film, and of all the awards he has received for his work, he would be most honored to be immortalized through America's stamp program," daughter Patricia Hitchcock said in advance of Monday night's stamp unveiling in Los Angeles.
Hitchcock never won a best director Academy Award in competition, although he was awarded the Irving Thalberg Memorial Award at the 1967 Oscar ceremony. The London-born Hitchcock died in Los Angeles in 1980.
