About CNNfyi.com

What is CNNfyi.com?

By combining the global resources of CNN, CNN Interactive and Turner Learning, CNNfyi.com will transcend the limitations of printed learning materials.

CNNfyi.com is designed with this goal in mind: To help educators and students keep pace with the world's volatile and ever-changing geographic, scientific and political landscapes. This educational Web site fills a growing need for lesson-related news and information by revealing the ways in which current news and events shape the future and affect our lives.

Site Description

CNNfyi.com will be a dual-focused educational Web site designed to address both educator and student needs. In order to address both audiences, two distinct areas have been created - one for the educator, one for the student.

For Educators

CNNfyi.com will provide educators with instructional resources, links, collaboration tools and professional development opportunities.

Instructional materials will be located within the teacher's edition of the site. These instructional materials will be organized in a manner that is both user-friendly and task efficient.

Posted lessons and activities will assist the teacher in efforts to integrate current events and stories into the context of various instructional areas, which are closely matched to classroom activities, lessons and curriculum standards.

Teachers also benefit because navigation is simple and intuitive - making it easy for students to find the materials they need.

CNNfyi.com will enable teachers to use several mediums in the classroom. By linking to CNN NEWSROOM, the daily news and information program airing on CNN, educators will have the technological benefits of both cable and Web site mediums. This link will allow educators to seamlessly access Web site content and programs airing on CNN NEWSROOM. The site will also use the CNN Student Bureau instructional materials to support authentic learning activities in a cross-curricular approach for teachers.

CNNfyi.com will offer a broad range of professional development resources for teachers, including daily education news, information on upcoming conferences and a community section for teacher exchange, including message boards, polls and a journal with links to valuable Web sites.

For Students

For students, the site will provide specially tailored multimedia news stories about U.S. and world events as well as features on popular topics such as sports, entertainment and science & technology.

Other assets for students will include a rich homework resource center, career and college resources, online forums and bulletin boards, and a forum for opinion and expression in bulletin boards and polls. The content is compelling with a serious, yet age-appropriate approach to news and information that encourages students to use the site at school and at home.

About CNNfyi.com's creators

CNNfyi.com is a partnership between CNN Interactive and Turner Learning.

CNN Interactive

CNN Interactive is responsible for the award-winning news site CNN.com, as well as nine other Web sites and the distribution of CNN news content via other platforms such as PageNet pagers and iMagic's PowerPhones. In February 1999, CNN Interactive launched CNN Mobile, the most comprehensive and advanced 24-hour global and pan-regional news and information service for GSM mobile phones. The CNN Web sites, which include CNN.com, CNNfn.com and CNNSI.com, are among the world's leading news and information Web sites. The CNN Web sites have served more than 612 million page impressions a month in 2000 and served more than 6.7 billion page impressions in 1999.

Turner Learning

Turner Learning, the educational arm of Turner Broadcasting System, Inc, is committed to enhancing education by making selected resources of the company available to schools worldwide. Turner Learning programs motivate and challenge students in literature, history, current events, science, economics, social studies, filmmaking and journalism. Award-winning programs include:

CNN NEWSROOM - CNN's commercial-free, daily news and features program for schools. This cornerstone Cable in the Classroom program is in use in over 23,000 schools.

CNN Student Bureau - The official worldwide student newsgathering and organization from CNN and Turner Learning. CNNSB offers students across the world the chance to hone their journalism skills and to publish their web and video work with the world's news leader.

TNT Learning - A partnership between Turner Network Television and Turner Learning brings select TNT specials and original films into the classroom, along with free accompanying curriculum guides which can be used across several disciplines.

TNT Learning programs have included the TNT Original Productions of ANIMAL FARM, FREEDOM SONG, and DON QUIXOTE, and the Broadcast Premieres of HAMLET and THE ENGLISH PATIENT. In addition to on-air programming, TNT Learning launched "Trick-or-Treat For UNICEF," which gives students the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of needy children. This program includes a curriculum guide, poster and suggestions for classroom activities.

TCM By The Book - Turner Classic Movies and Turner Learning offer an educational program for middle and high school students called TCM By The Book, a commercial-free, cost-free series offering schools the opportunity to record and show pre-selected classic movies.

TCM By The Book allows educators to complement their curriculum with classic movies and free accompanying curriculum materials to teach across several disciplines. Past series have included Novel to Film, Stage to Screen, and English Literature, and the 2000-2001 series features film biographies.

Cartoon Network - Animate Your World, Cartoon Network's Cable in the Classroom program, is a series of PSAs or "inspirations" that foster creativity and imagination in the classroom. The Animate Your World curriculum kit is available free of charge to interested educators. The kit contains lesson plans across a wide variety of disciplines for all of the inspirations.

Turner South - Turner South is Turner Broadcasting's only regional network which actively explores and celebrates the South in ways that build regional pride and a sense of community. To enhance that mission, an educational initiative based on "storytelling" will be available to cable affiliates and schools throughout the South in the fall of 2000.

Turner Sports - The Atlanta Thrashers, the city's new National Hockey League franchise, and Philips Electronics launched a statewide community initiative in Atlanta with SCORE FOR SCHOOLS, an educational, achievement-based program. This new educational program is designed to use the sport of hockey to teach traditional curriculums such as math, science, geography, history and physical education and is correlated to Georgia's Quality Core Curriculum Standards. SCORE FOR SCHOOLS motivates students to learn by integrating hockey into relevant content and measures the success of each student against state guidelines. Publishing Partnerships - Turner Learning also has extensive licensing and partnership agreements with Harcourt and Thomson Learning.
