The woman was pulled from water after she was swept in a canal

She was unconscious and had no pulse, a Border Patrol spokesman said

Two men who were with the woman fled back into Mexico

CNN  —

A woman trying to cross from Mexico into the United States apparently illegally was swept away in a Texas irrigation canal and was rescued, but has fallen into a coma, the U.S. Border Patrol said Wednesday.

The woman, who appears to be in her late 30s, remained at an El Paso hospital Wednesday evening, said Border Patrol spokesman Doug Mosier.

She and two men were trying to cross into El Paso under an international bridge Wednesday morning when she was swept away by swiftly moving water. Border Patrol agents rescued her downstream, but she was unconscious and had no pulse by then, Mosier said.

The two men with her fled back to Mexico, Mosier said.
