Robert Novak

Nationally syndicated columnist Robert Novak provides political commentary "from the right," on CNN's The Situation Room, as he discusses the hottest issues of the day with James Carville and Paul Begala, who provide commentary "from the left."

Novak was formerly co-host of CNN's political debate program, Crossfire, and co-executive producer and a panelist for CNN's The Capital Gang. Novak began with CNN during Crossfire's launch year in 1980; he also teamed with nationally syndicated columnist the late Rowland Evans to host the discussion program Evans & Novak. When Evans lost his battle with cancer in 2001, the program became Novak, Hunt and Shields. Novak went on to co-anchor Novak, Hunt & Shields, the iconic roundtable program, until 2002.

Novak began his career as a reporter for The Joliet Herald-News and The Champaign-Urbana Courier while attending the University of Illinois from 1948-1952. Following service in the U.S. Army as a lieutenant during the Korean War, he joined the Associated Press in Omaha, Neb., and from there he was assigned to Indianapolis, where he covered politics and the state legislature. In 1957, the AP transferred him to Washington, D.C., where he covered Congress. He joined The Wall Street Journal's Washington, D.C., bureau in 1958 as Senate correspondent and political reporter, becoming chief congressional correspondent for the newspaper in 1961.

In May 1963, he teamed with Evans, then congressional correspondent for The New York Herald-Tribune, to write Inside Report, a political column published four times a week and syndicated by Creators Syndicate to more than 150 newspapers. The Chicago Sun-Times has been the home newspaper for the column since 1966. At the time of Evans' death in 2001, he and Novak also wrote a biweekly newsletter The Evans-Novak Political Report.

Novak has written for most of the nation's periodicals and is a contributing editor for Reader's Digest. His first book was Agony of the GOP: 1964. Before Evans' death, Novak had collaborated with him on Lyndon B. Johnson: The Exercise of Power; Nixon in the White House: The Frustration of Power; and The Reagan Revolution.

He earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Illinois and since then, has received a distinguished alumnus award and an honorary doctorate degree from the university.

Novak also has an honorary doctorate degree from Kenyon College. Novak was a Radford Visiting Professor of Journalism at Baylor University in 1987, and he is the 2001 winner of the National Press Club's Fourth Estate Award for lifetime achievement in journalism.
