Intimate portraits show the diversity of America’s Muslims

“When you look at my series,” said photographer Carlos Khalil Guzman, “the stereotype that Muslims can be identified based on appearance becomes null.”

Guzman’s statement is borne out by “Muslims of America,” a photo series portraying everyday subjects as diverse and modern US citizens. The images depict college students, mental health counselors and activists, in places from Illinois to Kentucky and Louisiana.

New York education consultant Faria with her partner and son Iman, who was born with a rare genetic condition called Nicolaides-Baraitser syndrome.

"It's important to keep our minds open to others while respecting their lifestyles but more importantly, ensuring ours are halal and healthy," Michigan-based journalist, Dana, told Guzman.

"When we have faith in God, he will set things moving for us in ways that we cannot even imagine," California college student, Kenneth, told Guzman.

Nida, a freelance photographer and activist from Texas.

Guzman's series focuses on women, who he says are more often the target of hatred and misunderstanding.
